How to Measure a Refrigerator Removal Path

Five measurements that reveal whether a refrigerator can leave intact or needs doors and hardware removed first.

Measure the appliance at its widest, deepest, and tallest points, including handles and hinges. Then measure each doorway, hall turn, stair landing, and exterior threshold on the route. The smallest clearance controls the plan.

Start with the narrowest point

Do not assume the doorway used for delivery is still available. A new island, railing, storm door, or finished basement wall can change the route.

Record these five numbers

Write down the refrigerator width with and without handles, its cabinet depth, the narrowest doorway width, the tightest turning space, and the number of steps. A photo of each pinch point adds context that one number cannot.

If the unit is in a basement or on a split level, note ceiling height above stairs and whether the railing can be removed. The crew can then decide what equipment and staffing the job needs.

Prepare without taking risks

Remove food, loose shelves, bins, and ice. Secure the doors, but leave refrigerant lines and sealed components intact. Appliance refrigerants require proper handling; do not cut tubing or dismantle the compressor.

If the appliance is connected to water, arrange a safe disconnection before pickup. Tell the removal company about leaks, damaged flooring, or a door that no longer closes.

Pickup-readiness checklist

  • Appliance width, depth, and height
  • Handle and hinge projections
  • Every doorway and threshold
  • Hall turns and stair landings
  • Steps, railings, gates, and parking

Next step

Use the checklist to gather the job details, then review the companion refrigerator & freezer removal service page. Call only after utility and installation questions are settled.
